Osteoarthritis is caused when the layer of cartilage that covers the end of the bones gets worn out due to use or because of injury and bone spurs are formed. Large weight bearing joints of the hip and knee and the joints of the finger which are used a lot are usually affected. Only a few joints on either side of the body may be affected. Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of joint pain in adults older than 45 years. Women older than 55 years are more likely to suffer from Osteoarthritis compared to men. The joint pain worsens in cold and damp weather.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long term disease which is caused when the immune system attacks the human body. It results in the inflammation of joints and surrounding tissues. It affects many joints on both sides of the body. Arthritis can confirmed by taking an X-ray of teh affected joint.

If  bacteria or virus enter the space between 2 joints, the local immune response will cause swelling of the joint and pain. Bacterial infections will cause severe pain of only a single joint and may be due to problems with the lymph system. Viruses can cause pain all over the body.  Joint pain will disappear once the bacterial or virus infection is treated

Stretching and other exercises help to maintain joint mobility . By controlling the body weight , the strain of the hip and knee joints is reduced.

Treatment for joint pain include resting to allow the injury to heal. Warm baths and ice also reduce the swelling and provide some relief.  Physical therapy is used to improve muscle strength and movement at the joint but is not always effective. They can also relearn walking techniques.

Anti-inflammatory medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are widely used for pain relief. However, if  they are used for a long time,  they may cause ulcers, bleeding, heart attacks and strokes. Most medicines now carry a warning label. Disease modifying drugs and biologic response modifiers are used for treating severe rheumatoid arthritis. Natural remedies for joint pain
