The median nerve in the arm
controls sensation in the all the fingers in the hand , other than the
little finger. When the median nerve gets compressed, it causes pain or
numbness in the hand and wrist . This is known as the carpal tunnel
syndrome. The carpal tunnel syndrome can be because the carpal tunnel is smaller in some people. Women are three times more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome than men, because the carpal tunnel is smaller in women. It is more common in people with diabetes and in adults. Once carpal tunnel syndrome is detected, doctors advise complete rest for the affected arm to prevent further damage. Other ailments such as diabetes should be also treated. Acupuncture, yoga, exercise and drugs have been used to reduce the pain caused by the carpal tunnel syndrome.
